Citlali Bonilla Andersen
My journey into painting began as an act of self-healing—a way to process the world and give form to the things I couldn’t put into words. I found that abstract art was the ultimate language for my thoughts; it allowed me to move beyond boundaries and tap into something deeply instinctive. It was a true point of no return, altering my path forever.
In my work, texture is everything. For me, a painting is incomplete without it. Texture provides the physical weight that my emotions require, turning a flat surface into a living history of movement and touch.
My Process
Born in Mexico City, lived abroad in various countries and settled in Copenhagen, I have always sought new creative challenges. Today, my practice is an embrace of spontaneity and raw expression. Working primarily with acrylics, oil sticks, and pastels on raw canvas, I allow the materials to lead. I don’t start with a rigid plan; instead, I let the texture and the motion of my hand guide the composition.
Music is a constant in my studio and a vital component of my creative process. My movements are often gestural—driven by a specific beat or lyric—ensuring I remain entirely present in the moment.
The Experience
As a self-taught artist, my journey has been defined by a non-traditional path. I have developed a distinct technical language through years of observation, disciplined self-guided learning, and a dedicated daily studio practice.
My paintings are bold yet vulnerable, built through rich layers that create a sense of depth you can almost feel. When you stand in front of my work, I want you to feel the moment where order emerges from chaos. Behind the vibrant colors and heavy textures, there is a sense of restraint and devotion.
For me, my studio is more than just art—it is a way to claim space and capture a specific place, moment, or feeling. My work isn’t created simply to be admired; it is here to make a statement.
